Some Effective Methods to Beat Procrastination

There is usually a good reason why we all sometimes under perform.

For minor reasons, such as time wasting, give yourself a verbal warning. Remind yourself about what you should be doing and why you started it in the first place. If your procrastination becomes a habit consider a plan of action to measure your performance over a given period.

In most cases, procrastination is one of the most prevalent yet destructing factors that leads to lack of success.

In reality, procrastination is still considered normal up to a certain level. However, when it becomes persistent and recurring, it could stop you reaching your goals.

There are only two causes of procrastination: it can be either physiological or psychological. Whatever the causes are, procrastination should never be entertained and should be eliminated.

Hence, for those who wish to avoid any probable signs of procrastination, here are some tips to avoid it:

1. Learn to know the meaning of “start.”

The most common reason why people procrastinate is that they simply do not know how to start a certain task. Hence, in order to avoid procrastination just go on with your task and start doing the job. Once you have started it, things will just continue to flow and the job will be a lot easier than what you have anticipated.

The point here is that you will never know how hard is “hard” if you will never start working on it.

2. Avoid the “have to” attitude.

In order to steer clear from procrastination, it would be better to avoid the “have to” attitude. It would be better to work on things that you want to accomplish and not because you have to work on them. When you program your mind into doing things “that you have to do,” it will only create an impression that you are being compelled to work on things, even if it means they are against your will.

In this way, you will unconsciously sense a feeling of dislike and upheaval. At this point, procrastination sets in to protect you against these problems or agony. Hence, it would be better to think on your tasks as something that you want to do and not because you have to.

3. Learn to say “no.”

In order to avoid procrastination, you simply have to realize that there are things that you do not have to do. Hence, it would be better if you will learn to say no. Accepting things, even if it means pushing yourself to the limits, will only get you into trouble.

Keep in mind that saying “no” for an answer is not a crime, so do not be afraid in refusing jobs that are not that important.

4. Learn to accept that nothing is perfect in this world.

As much as the word “perfect” was created to define things that are beyond the imaginable, perfectionism can only bring more harm than good. Programming your mind to do things perfectly will only motivate stress; and in order to protect yourself from any harm that it will bring, you will tend to procrastinate.

Hence, it would be better to start things systematically, allowing some changes occasionally, because perfection can never be achieved in just one easy step. Break down the task into more convenient phases, where you can gradually correct any mistake and consider additional things that will lead your job into an “almost perfect” result.

The key is to start a little. You will only procrastinate if you will put the whole idea into one big event all at once. Remember the way to ‘eat an elephant is one piece at a time’

The key is to start doing your work. As you progress, you will be able to offset procrastination.
