The Amazing Power of Enthusiasm

Once upon a time, a salesperson named Richard was assigned to sell his products in a small rural town. Upon his arrival he was met by Danny, the only other salesperson assigned to the area. Having already been a salesperson for two years running, Danny felt it was his responsibility to guide and direct Richard, who was only a couple of months into the job. So Danny proceeded to give the rookie salesman what he felt was the best piece of advice he could provide. He was quick to tell Richard that he shouldn’t waste his energy selling to the people of the town, because he can expect to sell no more than a very little amount of his products there, as the town’s residents were often skeptical, cold, and stingy towards salesmen and their products. Everyday he would drag his feet to work, Danny told him, just for the sake of going to work.

“What’s the use of putting an effort? They won’t buy your goods anyway, no matter how hard you sell it to them”. He suggested that Richard do the same for as long as he was in that area, and start working hard only after he’s been assigned to another, more lucrative location.

Richard, although he was new to the job and had little experience as a salesperson compared to Danny, believed in the products he sold, and more importantly, possessed passion and zeal for his line of work. So on his first day, paying no attention to Danny’s advice, he set off to work full of energy and with a great big smile. He started selling his products, knocking on door after door, energetically giving demonstrations, handing out flyers and brochures, willingly answering questions, even providing a bit of entertainment at times. He soon began to realize that the people of the small rural town were nothing like the way Danny told him they are – in fact, they were the quite the opposite. Richard even managed to sell beyond his quota on his very first day.

Meanwhile, Danny continued dragging his feet to work, selling his products half-heartedly. He would barely sell enough of his products to meet half of his daily quota. He couldn’t figure out what he was doing wrong – he knew his products well, he had been trained properly and did everything that was required of a salesperson, but somehow he just couldn’t make the sale. Soon, while Richard continued to flourish as an excellent salesperson, Danny found himself unemployed.

The moral of the story? Never underestimate the power of enthusiasm, because a little of it can go a long, long way. Whatever you do in life, however big or small of a task, you will be able to do it much better if you have a sincere passion and zeal for it. Your enthusiasm will bring you the energy you need to accomplish whatever task in the best way that you can, thereby yielding the best results. Your enthusiasm can also influence the people around you, so that they too become energized and motivated to accomplish their duties in the best way that they can.

With the power of enthusiasm, a project or a job, however unpromising or dull, can become a most exciting and successful activity, and it’s solely up to you to make it that way – all you need is a bit of passion and motivation, a dash of inspiration, and a bolt of energy. All of this you can get from a dose of enthusiasm – that’s how strong of a force it is.
